GTP 110 RACE RULES

1.- ORGANIZATION AND EVENT

1.1: The Real Sociedad Española de Alpinismo Peñalara is responsible for organizing the Gran Trail Peñalara , which will take place on June 23 and 24, 2012 in the Sierra de Guadarrama. The starting line and finish line of the event will be located in the town of Navacerrada (Madrid).

1.2: The course of the Gran Trail Peñalara (GTP) is as follows: Navacerrada (Starting Line) – Collado del Piornal – Maliciosa – Canto Cochino – Collado de la Dehesilla – Hoya de San Blas – Puerto de la Morcuera – Rascafría - Puerto del Reventón – Peñalara – La Granja – Puerto de la Fuenfría – Puerto de Navacerrada – La Barranca – Navacerrada (Finish Line), The course is approximately 110 km with about 5,000 meters of accumulative height gain. Maximum time to complete the course is 30 hours. Participants who finish the GTP will receive a diploma and a memento accrediting them as finishers, 3 points for the UTMB - 2013, and their official time in the general classification and by categories, being eligible for awards according to the regulations established in part 5.

1.3: The race is semi-autonomous and will abide by the following rules and regulations.

 

2.- RACE COURSE

2.1: The course takes place in mountainous terrain of the Sierra de Guadarrama, on trails, pathways or cross country. Each participant should be fully aware of the length and difficulty of this event and that part of the event takes place at night, and possibly under adverse weather conditions such as rain, cold and wind. Participants should be prepared with the appropriate clothing and footwear and be physically fit to endure such an event.

2.2: The course will be marked (not fenced off) by the Organization, with bright colored plastic ribbons, banderoles, paint and other signs at regular intervals, depending on the type of terrain. Each participant is responsible for locating the signs and following them. Participants will be given a map to scale (1:25,000) with the marked course.

2.3: The different sections of the race that take place on paved roads in towns, or highways will not be free of traffic. Participants should follow the rules of the road and any indications provided by the Organization. It is mandatory to cross streets in crosswalks or areas specifically provided to do so.

2.4: It is mandatory to follow the marked itinerary and pass through all of the established control areas. Participants who take short cuts will be penalized with a minimum of 2 minutes, in minor infractions, or up to disqualification for major infractions, depending on the short cut taken, and where it was taken. Participants who do not pass through all of the set control posts and validate his/her chip will be disqualified. Any participant who uses any form of mechanical transportation will also be disqualified.

During the race, the Organization will set surprise controls as it deems necessary. Participants who do not stop at these controls will be disqualified.

2.5: Maximum time limits are set at certain control posts. Participants who arrive at the control after these times must turn in their race number and shall abandon the race and wait for instructions from race officials to return to the finish line.

    - Km 00 (Starting Line): 6:00 am
    - Km 18 (Canto Cochino): 10:30 am
    - Km 37 (La Morcuera): 3:30 pm
    - Km 52 (Puente del Perdón): 6:30 pm
    - Km 63 (Reventón): 9:30 pm
  • June 24
    - Km 78 (La Granja): 3:00 am
    - Km 101 (Puerto de Navacerrada): 10:00 am
    - Km 110 (Finish Line): 12:00 pm

2.6: The Organization can modify the race circuit at any time, if necessary, including suspension of the event, if weather conditions are not permitting or for other reasons of force majeure. Under these circumstances, the race registration fee will not be returned.

2.7: If it is necessary to suspend the race once it is underway, the general classification would be determined according to the order of arrival at this time or at the last control.

 

3.- SEMI-AUTONOMY

3.1: Given that the race is semi-autonomous, each participant is required to carry the necessary amount of food and drink he/she deems necessary to complete the route. The mandatory minimum requirements per participant are 500 Kcal in food and 1 (one) liter of water at the starting line.

3.2: The Organization will provide refreshment points, with reasonable amounts of food and drink, to be consumed at the points.

  • Km 18 - Canto Cochino (water, fruit, energy bars, nuts)
  • Km 30 - Hoya de San Blas (water, nuts)
  • Km 37 - Puerto de la Morcuera (water, fruit, energy bars, nuts)
  • Km 52 - Puente del Perdón-Rascafría (water, coca cola, fruit, cold cuts, bread)
  • Ks 63 - Pto. del Reventón (water, energy bars, nuts)
  • Km 78 - La Granja (water, coca cola, broth, fruit, cold cuts, bread)
  • Km 90 - Casa de la Pesca (water, energy bars, nuts)
  • Km 101 - Pto. de Navacerrada (water, coca cola, broth, fruit, cold cuts, bread)
  • Finish Line (water, isotonic drinks, coca cola, fruit, cold cuts, bread)

Cups will not be provided. Each participant should have his/her own recipient for drinks. Water is available exclusively for filling bottles and hydration packs.

3.3: Personal assistance is permitted only at the refreshment points and only in the areas specifically designated for these purposes (except in case of accident or emergency). Participants will be penalized if they do not follow this rule or if they receive assistance from more than one person.

Personal assistance is defined as receiving assistance, refreshments, exchange of material or clothing or be accompanied by a person NOT participating in the event.

3.4: It is mandatory for each participant to carry his/her garbage to the finish line or to the specifically marked areas for this purpose. If garbage is not disposed of correctly, the participant will be disqualified.

3.5: Each participant must carry the following mandatory items:   

  • Thermal Survival Blanket
  • Whistle
  • Water bottle or hydration pack, minimum 1 liter
  • Food (minimum 500 kcal)
  • Hat or similar
  • Elastic bandage
  • Head Lantern, with working batteries and extra batteries.
  • Windbreaker, raincoat, or similar
  • Rear Red Light
  • Cup or recipient of 15 cl (besides water bottle or pack)

3.6: The Organization may require other material depending on the possible weather conditions expected at the time of the race (long pants, gloves, polar fleece or similar, etc.) If this occurs, participants will be informed beforehand during the scheduled technical meeting.

3.7: Walking poles are permitted but the participant who decides to use them must carry them from the start to the finish. It is not permitted to leave them anywhere or give them to anyone without penalty.

3.8: From 9:30 pm on Saturday to 6:30 am on Sunday, or from when the Organization indicates, depending on how much daylight there is, it will be mandatory to wear the head lantern and the rear red light turned on.

3.9: There may be random controls during the race to check that participants have the mandatory items. The penalty for NOT carrying one or more of the items is 30 minutes for EACH item missing. If 4 items or more are missing, the participant will be disqualified. It is understood that the quantities of food and drink will diminish during the race, so this will not be sanctioned, except for at the start of the race.

 

4.- REGISTRATION

4.1: The event is open to participants who are at least 18 years old at the time of the race. The race categories are as follows (age on the day of the race):

MEN

  • Senior: 18 – 44 years old
  • Veterans: 45 – 55 years old
  • Superveterans: 56 years old and up

WOMEN

  • Senior: 18 – 39 years old
  • Veterans: 40 – 50 years old
  • Superveterans: 51 years old and up

4.1.: The Gran Trail de Peñalara also has a TEAM category which consists of 2 participants (men, women or combination). Registration should be as a TEAM under the specific section designated for this purpose.

4.2: To confirm registration and pick up race number, it is necessary to show legal photo identification such as passport or similar. Participants must contract accident insurance provided by the Organization. The cost is 10 euros and must be paid for at the time of registration. This amount will not be reimbursed under any circumstances.

4.3: Participants who have a federation license which covers them in events like the GTP, do not need to purchase the insurance provided by the Organization. However, it is mandatory that they show the license at the time they pick up their race number. Without the license, the participant cannot take part in the race. The license must be valid and must be recognized by the FEDME (Spanish Federation of Mountain Sports and Climbing) and cover mountain races.

4.5: If the participant decides NOT to race once they have registered, they may request reimbursement within the following deadlines:

  • From the date of registration to April 30, 2012: 80% of the total amount of the registration will be reimbursed.
  • rom May 1 to June 10, 2012: 50 % of the total amount of registration will be reimbursed.

4.5.1: If one of the members of a team withdraws and the other member would like to participate as an individual, the difference between the team registration and the individual registration will be calculated using the date of registration. Then, the penalty for withdrawal, as explained in point 4.5 will be applied according to the date of withdrawal.

4.6: All withdrawals must be requested in writing to infogtp@penalara.org indicating name and bank information. The Organization will make the reimbursement to the bank account provided. All requests will be considered after the race has concluded.

4.6.1 : Under no circumstances can a registered participant give their race number to someone else.

4.7: Each participant will receive a race number REGISTERED in his/her name and NONTRANSFERABLE. This number will be worn on the chest and be completely visible at all times. Participants whose numbers are not visible will be penalized.

4.8: Each participant will receive a chip that is also NONTRANSFERABLE and is responsible for stopping at the control points to have the chip read.

4.9: NO CHIP OR RACE NUMBER may be exchanged with another participant. This action would result in disqualification.

4.10: Each participant will pay a 10 euro deposit for the chip when they pick the chip up. This amount will be returned when the chip is returned at the finish line. The chip records the data received at each control and is used to record the final results and general classification of the race. The deposit will not be returned if the chip is not. Deposits will be returned during the race and up to two hours after its completion. Deposits will not be returned after that. ONLY 10 EURO BILLS will be accepted.

 

5.-AWARDS AND RANKING

5.1: In the Gran Trail de Peñalara awards will be given to the first three participants in each category as established in point 4. The first place overall male and female will also receive awards. The GTP will not offer awards if there are not a minimum of three participants in a given category. If there are not three participants, but a participant in this category finishes in the top half of the general ranking, they will be eligible for an award.

5.1.1: Team Ranking (only in the GTP ): awards will be given to the first three teams. To classify, teams must pass through all the controls and arrive at the finish line together. Teams will appear in the general classification but they will not be eligible for awards in the individual categories. If for unforeseen circumstances a team does not stay together but both members finish the race, they will appear in the general classification but are not eligible for awards.

5.2: If a winner does not show up to receive his/her award, the Organization understands that this person renounces it. If a winner asks someone else to receive his/her award, the Organization must be informed at least 2 hours before the award ceremony.

 

6.- WITHDRAWAL AND/OR DROPPING OUT

6.1: Any participant can drop out of the race by informing race officials at the nearest control area and turning in his/her race number . At this moment, they will be out of the competition and are responsible for themselves. The chip must be turned in at the finish line in order to receive the 10 euro deposit.

6.2: The Organization can force a participant to withdraw if this person shows evidence of serious physical problems (vomiting, diarrhea, disorientation, fainting, etc.) or if they are so fatigued that they cannot continue the race.

6.3: All participants are required to give first aid assistance to anyone who has had an accident or needs assistance. Those who do not assist will be disqualified.

 

7.- PENALIZATIONS

8.- CLAIMS

8.1: All claims should be presented to the Race Committee in writing with the following information:

  • Personal information: name and passport number and race number.
  • Names and race numbers of the participants involved.
  • Description of what occurred.

8.2:  Claims can be made from the time the race ends up to the moment the general classification is published.

8.3: Claims regarding the classification will be accepted up to 2 hours after its publication.

8.4: The Race Committee is responsible for resolving the claims and has 4 hours from the time they receive the claim to publish their decision.

8.5: Claims against the Race Committee decisions will be accepted in writing up to 7 days from the day after the publication of these decisions. These claims must be sent to RSEA Peñalara. The person who has submitted the claim must deposit 30 euros, which will be returned if the result of the claim is in favor of the race participant. RSEA Peñalara has up to 30 days to resolve the claim.

8.6: The Race Committee is comprised of the Race Director, the Race Course Coordinator and the Finish Line Coordinator.

 

9.- SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Friday, June 22:

  • 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm - Pick up Race Numbers
  • 8:00 pm - Technical Meeting regarding the race

Saturday, June 23:

  • 5:30 am - 5:55 am - Control for mandatory material (GTP and TP80K)
  • 6:00 am – Race Start (GTP and TP80K)
  • 7:15 am – Buses leave from Navacerrada to Rascafría (TP60K)
  • 8:30 am - 8:55 am - Control for mandatory material (TP60K)
  • 9:00 am – Race Start (TP60K)
  • 1:15 pm – Anticipated arrival of 1st runner (TP80K)
  • 4:00 pm – Anticipated arrival of 1st runner (TP60K)
  • 7:15 pm – Anticipated arrival of 1st runner (GTP)

Sunday, June 24:

  • 12:00 am – Finish Line Closes (TPK60)
  • 3:00 am – Finish Line Closes (TPK80)
  • 12:00 pm – Finish Line Closes (GTP)
  • 12:30 pm – Award ceremony
  • 1:00 pm – Closing Gathering (with appetizer)

 

10.- RESPONSIBILITY

10.1: All participants, just by registering for the event, automatically accept the conditions set forth in these regulations. Any circumstance not included in the regulations will be resolved by the Race Committee, using the Regulations for mountain races of the FEDME and the FMM, Federación Madrileña de Montañismo (Madrid Mountaineering Federation), in this order.

10.2 : The Organization is not responsible in case of accident or negligence on the part of any participant, nor is it responsible for the loss or breaking of personal objects. Each participant assumes full responsibility for and risk of bodily injury or death to themselves or others releasing the Organization and RSEA Peñalara, their directors, volunteers, event sponsors from any liability.
